Medvedev pushes for more modern defense

The Venezuelan government is disputing statements by Colombia’s minister of defence that Venezuela is allowing drug trade to flow through its borders.

Japanese destroyer collides with South Korean ship

A collision between a Japanese destroyer and a South Korean container ship in the waters off western Japan caused severe damage to both vessels.

The NHK World reports, “Japan’s Defense Ministry says the 5,200 ton Kurama and the 7,400 ton South Korean-registered Carina Star collided shortly before 8 PM on Tuesday, Japan Time, in the Kanmon Strait between Japan’s main islands of Honshu and Kyushu.”

22 children feared drowned in bridge collapse

As many as twenty-two children may have drowned when a suspension bridge collapsed in Malaysia.

The New Straits Times reports, “They were among 298 other pupils who were part of a four-day motivational programme comprising 60 schools from the Kinta Selatan district.

The children were in the midst of crossing a 30m hanging bridge, to get across Sungai Kampar, when the bridge suddenly collapsed.”

President Arroyo upset over food relief delays

A food relief caravan scheduled to leave on October 19 is still at a standstill. Philippine president Arroyo has expressed frustration over the inability to send those supplies to those in need.

The Inquirer.net reports, “The government was set to embark on a relief caravan for the thousands of calamity victims in Regions 1, 2 and 3, and the Cordillera Administrative Region beginning Oct. 19, but this was put off indefinitely in view of Typhoon “Ramil.”

The boxes of food packs and clothing were to be unloaded at the headquarters of local disaster coordinating councils for eventual distribution to residents displaced by flooding and landslides.”

Indonesian island and Australia caught in diplomatic standoff

Australia’s Herald Sun reports, “The governor of an Indonesian island told Australia yesterday that his country was “not a dumping ground” for asylum seekers – and refused permission for an Aussie ship to offload 78 Sri Lankan refugees.

The Oceanic Viking, a Customs vessel, last night remained anchored 10 nautical miles off Bintan Island as a bizarre diplomatic standoff continued.
