Canadian arrested in bomb plot in Denmark

The National Post reports, “The FBI has arrested a Canadian for his role in an alleged terrorist plot against the Danish newspaper that published the controversial Muhamad cartoons.

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 48, owner of First World Immigration Services, was charged with aiding a conspiracy to attack the Jyllands-Posten in Copenhagen.”

Obama declares US national emergency

A national emergency has been declared in the United States as swine flu deaths have reached one thousand.

Guardian.co.uk reports, “The flu, which has spread throughout much of the world and raised global alarm, has caused the deaths of more than 100 children in the US alone, and is widespread in 46 of America’s 50 states.

However, the White House said that declaring an emergency was a largely precautionary step aimed at allowing medical officials to bypass certain federal regulations in the event of a genuine disaster.”

Huge cocaine seizure off Guatemala’s coast

RIA Novosto reports the following: “A mini-sub with 10 metric tons of cocaine onboard has been seized some 180 miles of the coast of Guatemala in the country’s largest ever drug seizure, Mexican media reported on Friday.

Guatemalan Interior Minister Raul Velasquez said the drug was seized on Wednesday in a joint operation by U.S. anti-drug officers and Guatemalan military.”

Mexican border city reports record high murders

Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, across the U.S. – Mexican border with El Paso, Texas, has had almost 2,000 murders so far this year. The city has one of the highest murder rates in the world.

From a syracuse.com article, “The killings, averaging seven a day in the city of 1.5 million, can be blamed on an escalating drug war between the Sinaloa cartel run by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the most-wanted man in Mexico, and the Juarez Cartel, said Chihuahua state Public Safety Secretary Victor Valencia. The cartels are fighting to control the lucrative smuggling route between Ciudad Juarez and El Paso, just across the border in Texas.”

Scam software “protects” millions of computers worldwide

Symantec has announced that millions of computers have security software that was paid for, but is fradulent. This fake software actually leaves computers easier to be taken over.

From canada.com: “‘Lots of times, in fact they’re a conduit for attackers to take over your machine,’ said Vincent Weafer, Symantec’s vice-president for security response.

‘They’ll take your credit card information, any personal information you’ve entered there and they’ve got your machine,’ he said, referring to some rogue software’s ability to rope a users’ machine into a botnet, a network of machines taken over to send spam or worse.”

New Latin American currency aimed at replacing US dollar

The left bloc ALBA has approved a new currency to be used for intra-regional trade. The new currency is scheduled to begin next year.

“The bloc also called for the replacement of the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, which arbitrates international contract disputes and has probed a slew of disputes involving ALBA members and western energy firms.” [The Australian]

Boat seized off British Columbia coast

A ship off Canada’s British Columbia coast has been seized after it had sailed in Canadian waters unannounced, reports the Globe and Mail.

“In all, 76 men were found on the ship and were believed to be in good health, considering the voyage they had just undertaken, Rob Johnston, of the Canada Border Services Agency, said at a news conference.

Their vessel, the “Ocean Lady,” was also described as being in decent condition.”

News24 reports: “A suicide bomber blew himself up, killing seven commanders and 23 other people.

The headquarters of the armed forces blamed the bombing on ‘terrorists’ backed by ‘the Great Satan America and its ally Britain’.”
