US and Singapore improve relations

[Straits Times]- The United States and Singapore have signed three agreements to improve relations between the two countries. The documents are said to lead to cooperative development projects. Both countries have agreed to meet annually.

Canadian bank exec says US economy will never recover

[Canada.com]- The head of the Bank of Canada stated that in his opinion the United States economy will never completely recover. He is recommending that Canada should look to Asia to expand trade. China in particular needs increased Canadian trade.

China takes issue with US trade probe

[China Daily]- The Chinese government has stated that the ongoing investigation of exported wind towers could hurt cooperation in energy and industry with the United States. The probe was announced Thursday over excessive dumping margin in wind tower prices from China and Vietnam.

Obama to say no to Keystone pipeline permit

[Oklahoman]- Media outlets are now reporting the President Obama will reject the permit to build the Keystone pipeline. The pipeline was to be built from Alberta, Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast. It would have reduced the price of transporting oil from the wells to the refineries and would have required thousands of workers to build and maintain.

Myanmar releases political prisoners to gain US favor

[Globe and Mail]- Myanmar’s government sent a message of its desire to improve relations by releasing many of the country’s most well known political prisoners. The hope is that the United States and the West will lift trade restrictions. Over 600 people were freed.

Subcommittee asks Homeland Security to monitor social media

[Baltimore Sun] Homeland Security was urged in a letter from top house-subcommittee members to monitor social media to identify security threats. Concerns exist that terrorists are using sites such as Facebook and Twitter. A list of websites monitored by Homeland Security was released earlier this week.

GM Leads U.S. Carmaker Gains in China

In spite of a slowdown in the Chinese market, General Motors and Ford have reached new highs in automobile sales in the Asian country. “Deliveries to Chinese dealers climbed 8.3 percent from a year earlier to 2.55 million vehicles, Detroit-based GM said in a statement yesterday. Ford said its sales grew 7 percent to 519,390 units. Toyota Motor Corp. (7203), Japan’s biggest carmaker, said last week that China sales rose last year at the slowest pace since at least 2004 and Honda Motor Co. (7267) yesterday reported its first ever annual decline in deliveries in the country,” reports bloomberg.com.

Honduras: Government Looks to Venezuela for Aid

“In a communiqué released on Dec. 24, center-right Honduran president Porfirio (“Pepe”) Lobo Sosa said his government intended to have the country return to Petrocaribe, a program through which Venezuela provides oil to other Caribbean countries at favorable terms,” an article at venezuelaanalysis.com states.

Lobo had previously received support as the previous Honduran president was viewed as being to close to Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez.

Mexico goalkeeper arrested for helping kidnap gang

Former goalkeeper from the Mexico’s international soccer team Omar Ortiz was arrested for aiding a group of kidnappers. From a reuters.com story, “The 35-year-old Ortiz admitted helping to pick out two rich victims for the kidnappers, said Jorge Domene, government security spokesman for the northern state of Nuevo Leon.

The gang, who said they belonged to a drug cartel, sought an average of 1 million pesos ($73,000) per victim, of which Ortiz received a cut of more than 100,000 pesos, Nuevo Leon’s government said.”
