[Canada.com]- The head of the Bank of Canada stated that in his opinion the United States economy will never completely recover. He is recommending that Canada should look to Asia to expand trade. China in particular needs increased Canadian trade.

Obama to say no to Keystone pipeline permit

[Oklahoman]- Media outlets are now reporting the President Obama will reject the permit to build the Keystone pipeline. The pipeline was to be built from Alberta, Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast. It would have reduced the price of transporting oil from the wells to the refineries and would have required thousands of workers to build and maintain.

Cellphone bans haven’t made roads safer

Statistics show that bans on cell phone usage while driving have not improved safety. “…despite all the hype, countless studies and the pontificating by the self-righteously smug that hordes of us are dying because we were all so distracted by our iPhones, it turns out the banning of in-car communications by many jurisdictions (including Ontario) has not reduced accidents one iota. Indeed, there’s a possibility that the restrictions made things worse.”

Canada Stocks Trail U.S. by Most Since ’98 as Commodities Fall

From a story at businessweek.com, “Canadian stocks trailed U.S. equities this year by the most since 1998 as the European debt crisis and slowing growth in developing markets drove down commodity shares.” Canadian oil, gas, and metal shares have fallen dramatically.

Canadian police receive new powers

Police in Toronto now have the right to search anyone who is too close to the buildings used for the G20 meetings. “Ontario’s cabinet quietly passed the new rules on June 2 without legislature debate,” reports CBC News.

Canadian arrested in bomb plot in Denmark

The National Post reports, “The FBI has arrested a Canadian for his role in an alleged terrorist plot against the Danish newspaper that published the controversial Muhamad cartoons.

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 48, owner of First World Immigration Services, was charged with aiding a conspiracy to attack the Jyllands-Posten in Copenhagen.”

Boat seized off British Columbia coast

A ship off Canada’s British Columbia coast has been seized after it had sailed in Canadian waters unannounced, reports the Globe and Mail.

“In all, 76 men were found on the ship and were believed to be in good health, considering the voyage they had just undertaken, Rob Johnston, of the Canada Border Services Agency, said at a news conference.

Their vessel, the “Ocean Lady,” was also described as being in decent condition.”

Canadian house sales up 18% in Q3

[CBC News]– The Canadian Real Estate Association says 135,182 homes were sold countrywide in the third quarter, up 18 per cent from a year earlier and the most ever for the period.

It’s the biggest year-over-year increase since early 2002, the group said Thursday.

Building on two previous quarterly increases, seasonally adjusted home sales on the agency’s Multiple Listing Service now stands 48 per cent above the low reached in the fourth quarter last year.

Gustavo Gutierrez Masareno was the model Mexican law-enforcement officer.

His portrait was displayed on billboards in Ciudad Juarez as the new face of authority: trustworthy, respectful of human rights.

He had been honoured by the state governor of Chihuahua for solving cold-case murders of women and girls in a region notorious throughout the world for its feminicidios – more than 400 femicides in the past 10 years alone linked to sex crimes.

Gas shortage due to Shell refinery repairs

[CBC News]– A longer than expected maintenance at a Shell refinery has resulted in another gasoline shortage at retail stations in Alberta.

The company’s own stations, as well as others supplied by Shell, began running out of gas and diesel over the long weekend.
