Network Rail admits guilt in Grayrigg crash

[BBC News]- Network Rail accepts guilt over health and safety issues from the Grayrigg crash in Cumbria. This Virgin train crash killed one woman and left over eighty passengers injured. The train derailed at 92 miles per hour after traveling on a “degraded” set of points. The Network Rail chief executive, David Higgins knew that the company was to blame within hours after the tragic crash.

PM David Cameron trying to create more responsible drinking

[BBC News]- England’s Prime Minister, David Cameron is doing his best to tame alcohol abuse. He asks for bars, supermarkets, and drink industries to help in order to halt the 2.7 billion euro per year that drunkenness and alcohol abuse create. Cameron is forming ideas in order to stop this problem.

Argentina reports that UK sent nuclear sub near Falklands

[BBC News]- The Prime Minister of Argentina has claimed that the UK sent an armed nuclear sub near the Falklands. The British were forced to tell the locations of their submarines. Ban Ki-moon, the UN chief talked to both in order to avoid a conflict similar to the 1982 war over British oversea territory.

Prince Harry to visit Brazil

[The Telegraph]- Prince Harry’s unofficial role as trade envoy has led him to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo. This trip, organized by the Foreign and Commonwealth office is to support the GREAT campaign. The GREAT campaign is meant to encourage ties in Britain and Brazil for the upcoming Olympic games in London.

Olympics at risk for cheating

[BBC News]- Illegal betting has occured in relation to the Olympics, causing athletes to be at risk of cheating. The head of the international police agency, Mr. Noble believes that because cheating has occured in other sports like football, there is a possibility it could occur in the Olympics. There will be heavier patrol along the border as a precaution.

Cameron denies ‘dictating’ terms of Scottish referendum

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, claims to want a “legal, fair and decisive” vote, but “Scotland’s Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon accused Westminster of “trying to interfere in Scottish democracy,” bbc.co.uk. “Government sources have denied reports Westminster would set an 18-month limit on holding the poll, if it transfers powers for a binding vote to Holyrood. But ministers may insist on a “yes or no” vote on independence – without the option of more powers for Scotland.”

Scottish Trident nuclear plans would leave UK without deterrent

An expert on defence has written an opinion that if Scotland eliminates its nuclear arms, the whole of the United Kingdom would follow suit. From scotsman.com, “In an article for Scotland on Sunday, William Walker, professor of international relations at St Andrews University, says the SNP policy of removing Trident from Scotland after independence would ‘amount to a promise to shut down the UK’s nuclear deterrent and enforce its disarmament’.

As a result, an independent Scots government might have to compromise on removing the weapons or leave the UK without a nuclear shield.”

Oxford Street stabbing: Teenager dies near Foot Locker

Eleven people were arrested on Oxford Street after a fatal stabbing. As told in bbc.co.uk, “An 18-year-old man has been stabbed to death in London, on one of the UK’s busiest shopping streets. The victim died outside the Foot Locker sports shop on Oxford Street, near the junction with Stratford Place.”

Suicide attempt caused Barnstaple house explosion

“An explosion which destroyed a house in north Devon last year was caused by a man’s attempt to kill himself, a court has heard,” BBC News. The 23 year old man, Oliver Moon, was released from a mental hospital only weeks before the suicide attempt. His attempt caused “ £1m damage to 14 properties.”

Olympic terror flights will divert to Scotland

In order to protect London from terrorist attacks during the upcoming Olympics, plans have been announced to divert terror flights north to Scotland. From a story at scotsman.com, “If there is a bomb alert, an attempted hijacking or intelligence that the plane could be hijacked, an aircraft is diverted so it does not pass over highly populated areas. During the Olympics, such planes will be sent to Prestwick.”
