Teen shot after running over police officer

From a story at thelocal.se, “A 16-year-old-boy was shot by police in Gothenburg early Thursday morning after the vehicle the teen was driving hit an officer in what police believe was a deliberate attempt to run the officer over.” Both survived but have serious injuries.

Ethiopia Convicts Swedish Journalists of Supporting Terrorism

An Ethiopian court has convicted two journalist from Sweden of aiding a terrorist group and entering the country illegally. Voanews.com reports, “The two Swedes were arrested June 30 in Ethiopia’s Somali region while traveling with rebels of the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), which is fighting for regional autonomy. The region has been off-limits to most outsiders for years while government troops carry out what human rights groups allege is a harsh counterinsurgency campaign against the ONLF.”

They could be sentenced to up to 18 years in prison.

Sweden democrats call Islam ‘Sweden’s biggest threat’

The leader of the Sweden democrat party stated that Islam is Sweden’s threat since World War II.

The Local reports, “He goes on to claim that more than ten Muslim terrorist organizations have established themselves in Sweden, that Sweden has the most rapes in Europe, and that Muslim men are highly overrepresented among the perpetrators.”

Former South Korean major-general arrested for leaking secrets to Saab

The Local reports as follows: “A former South Korean air force major-general was arrested on Friday on charges of leaking classified military information to Swedish defence and aviation company Saab, officials said.”

The information was alleged to have been to the Swedish company during a nine month period ending earlier this year.

Stockholm’s bunnies burned to keep Swedes warm

[The Local]– The bodies of thousands of rabbits culled every year from the parks in Stockholm’s Kungsholmen neighbourhood are being used to fuel a heating plant in central Sweden.

The decision to use Stockholm’s rabbit cadavers as bioenergy to warm Swedes living in Värmland doesn’t sit well with Stockholm-based animal rights activists.

Terror suspect Swedes freed from Pakistan

[The Local]– The Swedish foreign ministry has confirmed that four Swedish citizens, arrested in Pakistan in August as terrorist suspects, have been released and put on a flight to Stockholm.

The group include Mehdi Ghezali, who spent two years in Guantánamo Bay following his 2001 arrest in Afghanistan, as well as 28-year-old Munir Awad and 19-year-old Safia Benaouda, and their two and a half-year-old boy.

“I can confirm that they have been released,” Cecilia Julin, head of press at the Foreign Ministry told news agency TT.

Sweden cautions Czechs over Lisbon ‘opt outs’

[The Local]– The Swedish EU presidency has cautioned the Czechs that their demands for an extra “footnote” on the treaty sends out “the wrong message at the wrong time”.

Czech President Vaclav Klaus on Thursday became the sole European leader to hold out against the EU reform treaty and set new conditions for ratification, as Poland’s Lech Kaczynski pledged to sign it this week.

But France, in an immediate reaction to the Czech leader’s demand, said it would oppose any prerequisites and underlined that the Lisbon Treaty had been approved by the Czech parliament and senate.

Swedish banks warned on Latvian economy

[The Local]– Sweden’s finance minister Anders Borg is reported to have held secret talks with Swedbank and SEB, expressing his concern over Latvia’s struggling financial situation.

The two banks have interests in the Baltic country and a financial collapse could lead to a ’nightmare scenario’ writes newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.
