Medvedev pushes for more modern defense

RIA Novosti reports, “The Russian president said on Monday that the country’s defense industry must ensure the effective modernization of the military and provide it with state-of-the-art weapons.

Dmitry Medvedev said ‘the restructuring of the Armed Forces should be complete in two months,’ adding that the next task was more challenging: ‘re-outfitting of the army and navy.’”

Norway claims Russia’s military build-up is of no concern

Moscow party leader’s vote not counted

Sergei Mitrokhin, leader of the Yabloko party, cast his vote for his party on the October 11 elections, but the polling station he voted at showed no votes at all for his party.

The St. Petersburg Times reported, “Yabloko’s latest claim came as evidence mounts of blatant falsifications in the elections, which were swept by United Russia and prompted a rare walkout in the State Duma last week.

Yet President Dmitry Medvedev has made no public comment on what is probably the biggest political scandal of his 18-month reign, and he has been coy about a demand by Duma rebels to discuss their grievances personally.”

3 Factions Boycott Duma Over Vote

[The St. Petersburg Times]– In a surprise protest, State Duma deputies representing three factions walked out of the parliament Wednesday to denounce weekend elections swept by United Russia.

The deputies with the Communist, Liberal Democratic and Just Russia parties demanded a meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev, who had endorsed the election results Monday.

Anti-nuclear group criticizes German waste shipments to Russia

[Deutsche Welle]– In the wake of a French investigation into reports that nuclear waste is sent from French plants to Siberia, news has emerged that Germany has a long tradition of shipping toxic waste to Russia.

The German anti-nuclear group “Ausgestrahlt” said that since 1996, Germany’s only uranium enrichment plant in Gronau has shipped about 22,000 tons of uranium hexafluoride, which is a compound used in the uranium enrichment process, to Russia.

Russia concerned by U.S. missile shield talks with non-NATO states

[RIA Novosti]– Russia is concerned by U.S. missile defense talks with countries outside NATO, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Thursday.

The statement came following reports on talks between the United States and Ukraine on the possible use of the latter’s radars or deployment of a new radar in the ex-Soviet state as part of the American missile defense program.

Russia, China sign deals worth $3.5 billion

[The Jakarta Post]– Russia and China signed agreements worth $3.5 billion Tuesday, but the former rivals-turned-strategic partners were still working on an energy deal, a top Russian official said.

The deals were signed during a visit by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to bolster energy, political and military ties.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov told reporters that Russian and Chinese businessmen and officials signed the agreements, including $500 million loans each from the China Development Bank to its Russian equivalent VEB, and from the Agricultural Bank of China to the state-controlled VTB bank.

Luzhkov’s hollow victory

Sunday’s Moscow City Duma elections produced a predictable landslide victory for Mayor Yury Luzhkov, with only three Communists expected to win seats for the opposition as preliminary estimates showed a 66 per cent vote for United Russia.

But although the campaign was fought fiercely, with opposition parties of all stripes complaining of foul play by City Hall, a low turnout of 34 per cent showed that most Muscovites were convinced that the election was only an “imitation” of a contest, that their vote would change nothing, and that the City Duma was pretty irrelevant anyway.
