U.N. resolve on Syria brutality blocked by Russia and China

[LA Times]- Russia and China stopped the United Nations Security Council’s resolution for the violent attacks in Syria. The resolve was supporting an Arab League idea which might have quickened Syrian President Bashar Assad’s leave from office. Russia and China put a halt to the plans because they felt that the resolution by the U.N. was one sided and would only hold the government accountable, not the rebels wanting Assad to leave.

UN resolution on Syria could cause civil war

[Voice of America]- According to Russia, a Western and Arab exertion for the UN to find a resolution on Syria will inevitably lead to civil war. Russia’s foreign minister, Gennady Gatilov believes that the consistent push for Western and Arabs resolution will not lead to a compromise. Recent fighting in the Damascus suburbs and central province of Homs in Syria led to about 100 civilian deaths.

PM Putin calls for stiffer penalties for employing illegals

[St. Petersburg Times]- Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has asked for those responsible for employing illegal aliens to be subject to criminal charges. Currently the penalties for such actions are fines. Putin is also wants to see a program where immigrants be required to pass language and cultural tests.

Medvedev sacks another governor due to poor election results

[The Moscow Times]- President Medvedev of Russia took action against a third governor Tuesday. Anatoly Brovko has been removed as governor of Volgograd Oblast. Officially Brovko has resigned, but the opposition stated that he was forced out of office as a result of poor voter support in last month’s elections.

Putin is asked not to run for presidential campaign

[Washington Post]- Vladimir Putin, the Russian Prime Minister recently released a website displaying his presidential campaign. Statements from skeptics overflowed the website with complaints about Putins decision to run. The website is currently blocked due to the cynical comments that were posted to the site.

Kremlin Keeps Silent on New Massive Protest

Putin’s Halcyon Days Are Over

Vladimir Putin’s popularity has dropped tremendously since he finished his second term as president, but in public he projects an image of someone who thinks he still has the support of the Russian people. Sptimes.com reports, “In 2007, Putin had become the epitome of a “strong hand” that so many Russians admired. He was a leader who “soaked” not only terrorists and certain oligarchs, but also bashed the United States and NATO when necessary.”

“But now, Putin’s strong arm isn’t performing the same wonders that it used to. Russians are placing new demands on him and his government. After millions witnessed blatant election fraud on Dec. 4, tens of thousands of people across the country demonstrated under the slogans ‘We are not cattle!’ ‘Stop lying to us!’ and ‘We demand respect!’”

Russia arrests New Year’s protesters

Washingtonpost.com stated that, “Police prevented protesters organized by a radical leftist leader from gathering in central Moscow on New Year’s Eve, as a year that brought dramatic and unexpected change to Russia drew to a close. About 200 people converged on Triumfalnaya Square in the early evening darkness, perhaps half of them journalists, for a rally organized by Eduard Limonov in support of freedom of assembly.”

More Than 10,000 Gather at Biggest Rally in 10 Years

Protests were held in Russia against election fraud. From sptimes.ru, “Part of the national campaign of protests demanding the annulment of election results because of multiple violations — the largest being a rally in Moscow attended by between 25,000 to 150,000, according to various estimates — the St. Petersburg rally was organized via Vkontakte (the Russian equivalent of Facebook) originally as an unauthorized assembly on Ploshchad Vosstaniya in central St. Petersburg.”

Putin Assails U.S. and Protesters

Themoscowtimes.com says that, “Prime Minister Vladimir Putin ridiculed opposition protesters, assailed the United States and hinted at further political reform in a traditional televised call-in show Thursday that bore all the hallmarks of a presidential campaign speech.” Putin answered many questions on the 4 hour 36 minute show, “but overall he stuck to his narrative that protests were a dangerous source of instability”.
