Under water search comes to end for missing Costa Concordia passengers

[Washington Post]- The under water search of the sunken Costa Concordia ship is called off by Italian emergency officials because it is putting rescue workers at risk. The hull of the ship is damaged which brings concerns of safety for the rescuers. However, the search will continue in the part of the ship above water and the waters surrounding the ship, where the situations are more workable.

Italian captain says he was told to go close to shore

[Reuters]- The Costa Concordia captain declared that his managers told him to take the liner close to the shore the night that it ran into the ground. The company has denied all knowledge of this movement. During Captain Francesco Schettino arrests he made a phone call to an acquaintance, Fabrizio. Unbeknownst to the captain the phone call was being recorded. Schettino said in the conversation that his manager insistently told him “go there, go there”. Costa Concordia captain ordered back aboard ship during tragedy

[Miami Herald]- Recordings made during the sinking of the Costa Concordia off the Tuscan coast have now been released. They show among other things that Captain Francesco Schettino had fled the ship before all of the passengers had escaped from the vessel. Italian Coast Guard personnel ordered the captain back aboard the ship.

Schettino faces charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship for his actions during and leading up to the disaster.

Bodies found in Costa Concordia ship

[BBC News]- More bodies were recently discovered off the western coast of Italy in the sunken part of the Costa Concordia ship. The ship held 4,000 passengers when it hit rocks earlier this week. Seventeen people continue to remain uncounted for. The fact that the ship hit rocks on a day with such calm conditions is causing police to investigate why the incident took place. Update

Watchdogs say press freedoms increasingly at risk in some EU states

[Deutsche Welle]– Restrictions and crackdowns on press freedoms are not just the preserve of autocratic nations, according to watchdog organizations. A number of EU nations have joined the list of those experiencing an erosion of rights.

Western Europe continues to boast the world’s highest level of press freedom, as documented by annual reports and analysis by rights groups such as Reporters without Borders and Freedom House. However, some European countries have seen an increase in restrictions in press freedoms which suggest that Europe is not immune from the continuing decline in press freedoms around the world.
