Norway claims Russia’s military build-up is of no concern

Finland proposing uniform religious teaching

Finland is looking at sweeping changes to its religious education system. Currently, children are divided into groups based on faith.

IceNews reports, “Veli-Matti Kanerva, Director for Educational Services Development in Tampere advocates a move away from parallel religious study to learning general ethics. “It’s difficult to find qualified teachers for minority religions in Finland. The teachers we do finds lack a pedagogical background,” claimed Kanerva.”

Finland moves to eliminate tobacco

[IceNews]– The Finnish Ministry for Social Affairs and Health is set to propose legislation that will see the country pursue a course to a tobacco-free society. If passed, the new laws would make Finland the world’s first country dedicated to eradicating tobacco use.

The Finnish parliament was presented with a draft proposal by the Ministry last Thursday and is expected to discuss the new legislation in the coming days, SIKUnews reports.

Finland in dispute over sale of surplus nuclear power

The Finnish finance minister Jyrki Katainen said last week that he would be happy to export surplus nuclear generated electricity.

According to Newsroom Finland, Katainen’s statement came just one day after the economic affairs minister Mauri Pekkarinen had advised the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE that Finland could not export any of its nuclear-generated electricity. “Alongside the export debate one should bring up a debate over whether imports of nuclear-generated electricity should be banned,” Mr Katainen said during the management meeting. “Nobody has proposed that, yet there are plenty of those ready to ban exports,” he stated at the time.

Russia queries Arctic Sea cargo

Russia’s top investigator has said a cargo ship which went missing for more than two weeks may have been carrying a more sensitive cargo than first stated.

Alexander Bastrykin’s comments to Interfax news agency are the first official suggestions that the Arctic Sea was carrying more than timber.

The vessel was eventually found on 16 August off West Africa, having apparently being hijacked.

There has been much speculation it may have been carrying weapons for export.

Russian navy joins hunt for ship

Russia’s navy has been deployed to find a ship reportedly hijacked three weeks ago in the Baltic Sea.

Up to five vessels – reported to include nuclear submarines – will be involved in the search for the Maltese-flagged Arctic Sea, the navy confirmed.
