China takes issue with US trade probe

[China Daily]- The Chinese government has stated that the ongoing investigation of exported wind towers could hurt cooperation in energy and industry with the United States. The probe was announced Thursday over excessive dumping margin in wind tower prices from China and Vietnam.

Thousands of Vietnamese still forced into slavery

[Vietnam News]- Thousands of people in Vietnam have been forced into slavery during the past several years. Most are women who live in villages in the northern and central portions of the country. Many of these people were sold in China. Organizations are educating women on how to reduce the dangers of abduction and coercion.

Vietnamese teacher sentenced for using democracy banner

[Taipei Times]– A Vietnamese court sentenced a secondary school physics teacher yesterday to three years in prison followed by three years of probation for hanging a banner on a bridge calling for multi-party democracy.

Vu Hung, who turns 43 on Saturday, was among nine people linked to banned pro-democracy group Bloc 8406 whose arrests last year and lengthy pre-trial detentions have been criticized by human rights groups.

All nine were on trial this week. A diplomat with knowledge of the case said they were affiliated with Bloc 8406, a three-year-old group advocating democratic reform.

President meets Fidel Castro, top Cuba leaders

[Vietnam News]– President Nguyen Minh Triet affirmed the continued friendship, support and solidarity by the Party, State and people of Viet Nam for their Cuban counterparts during a courtesy call on former Cuban President Fidel Castro on Monday.

Triet said he believed that the Cuban people, under the leadership of the Cuban Communist Party, comrade Fidel Castro and President Raul Castro, would overcome all challenges and gain new achievements during the development of socialism in Cuba, which would contribute to the struggle for protecting independence and sovereignty of the people in Latin American countries and the world at large.

Vietnam to hand over more US MIA remains

The remains of what are believed to be US servicemen who died in the Vietnam War will be handed over to the US government on September 12 in the 111th repatriation ceremony held by the two nations.

The remains to be handed over at Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport include those recovered by a Vietnamese excavation team in central Vietnam, as well as remains turned over by Vietnamese citizens. The exact number of persons the remains account for will be released at the ceremony, according to the US Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City.

Over 1,000 shoe workers strike in Binh Duong

At least a thousand workers have been on strike in Binh Duong Province since Wednesday, demanding higher wages and better working conditions, their employer told AFP Thursday.

“They have violated the labor law, which may cause losses for the enterprise. So they might be fired,” said an official from An Thinh Leather Shoes Company, which produces shoes for export.
