China executes fourth Filipino convicted of drug trafficking

China has executed another Filipino for smuggling drugs into China. Vancouversun.com reports that “The man was caught carrying 1.5 kilograms of heroin on Sept. 13, 2008, at Guilin International Airport in southern China, where trafficking of at least 50 grams of any prohibited drug is punishable by death.”

President Arroyo upset over food relief delays

A food relief caravan scheduled to leave on October 19 is still at a standstill. Philippine president Arroyo has expressed frustration over the inability to send those supplies to those in need.

The Inquirer.net reports, “The government was set to embark on a relief caravan for the thousands of calamity victims in Regions 1, 2 and 3, and the Cordillera Administrative Region beginning Oct. 19, but this was put off indefinitely in view of Typhoon “Ramil.”

The boxes of food packs and clothing were to be unloaded at the headquarters of local disaster coordinating councils for eventual distribution to residents displaced by flooding and landslides.”

‘Ramil’ slowing down over Pacific

The latest forcast has Typhoon “Ramil” (Lupit – international name) will make landfall in the northern Philippines either Thursday night or early Friday. The storm has slowed on its west – southwest treck.

In an Inquirer.net story, “‘The conditions are favorable again but it could still gain strength before making a landfall. It is still possible for ‘Ramil’ to turn into a supertyphoon,’ said Pagasa chief, Dr. Prisco Nilo.”

Typhoon Lupit gains strength as it heads towards Philippines

Typhoon Lupit is gaining strength as begins its westward march toward the Philippines. Emergency supplies are being sent to northern Luzon.

Inquirer.net reports, “Packing peak winds of 175 km per hour gusting up to 210 kph, Ramil was “almost stationary” for a few hours Sunday before moving slowly west. It was expected to smack Cagayan either Wednesday evening or early Thursday, weather officials said.”

Typhoon Lupit bears down on Philippines

[Photo copyright Tomas Tam]– The Sun reports on preparations for the eighteenth typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

“The Philippines placed emergency teams on alert Sunday and dispatched relief goods to areas that could be struck by a new typhoon, as the death toll in two previous storms reached 818.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said rescue personnel and equipment had been “positioned to strategic areas” to respond to any accidents that may occur during Typhoon Lupit.“

Flood-borne diseases on the rise

[The Philippine Star]– Health officials warned the public yesterday of an increase in cases of leptospirosis and other water-borne diseases in calamity areas that are still flooded after Luzon was ravaged by tropical storm “Ondoy” and typhoon “Pepeng” in the past two weeks.

From Sept. 29 to Oct. 12, the Department of Health (DOH) recorded 181 leptospirosis cases, with 152 of the patients reported in Metro Manila.

Landslide deaths lift Philippine storm toll past 540

[channelnewsasia.com]– The death toll from two weeks of unprecedented storms across the northern Philippines soared past 540 on Friday after landslides consumed homes and neck-deep floods inundated towns.

At least 181 people were killed in a series of rain-triggered landslides overnight Thursday and on Friday in mountainous regions of the Philippines main island of Luzon, officials in those areas reported.

Meanwhile, the downstream farming plains of central Luzon were inundated with waters that reached two storeys high after dams in the mountains could not hold the phenomenal amount of water that has fallen on the region.

Typhoon Parma kills 15 in the Philippines as another storm looms

[channelnewsasia.com]– Large parts of the northern Philippines were flooded and without power Sunday after Typhoon Parma killed at least 15 people, as authorities warned of another storm looming to the east.

Exactly one week after storm Ketsana dumped the heaviest rains in more than 40 years that devastated Manila, killing nearly 300 people, Parma ripped through the north of the Philippines’ main Luzon island on Saturday.

Thousands flee ‘Pepeng’

[philstar.com]– Tens of thousands of villagers fled the likely path of a powerful typhoon bearing down on the country Friday, as the government braced for the possibility of a second disaster just days after a storm killed more than 400.

Heavy rain drenched mountainous coastal regions in the northeast as typhoon “Pepeng” (international codename: Parma) tracked ominously toward heavily populated areas still saturated from the worst flooding in 40 years.

Supertyphoon coming

[Inquirer.net]– Say prayers, prepare and brace for the worst.

With a more powerful storm threatening the country, officials on Thursday issued this advice to the public as Metro Manila and neighboring areas continued to reel from the devastation wrought by Tropical Storm “Ondoy.”

The weather office said Typhoon “Pepeng” (international name: Parma) could develop into a supertyphoon within the next 24 hours and would not weaken even if it made landfall.
