Pakistani operation kills 60 militants

Asia News Network reports: “At least 60 terrorists were killed on Sunday (October 18) in operation Rah-e-Nijat in the South Waziristan region on the Afghan border, reports said.

According to Pakistan’s Inter Services Public Relations, forces have secured area upto Mandana, Kund and Tarakai areas on Jandola-Kotkai-Sararogha axis.”

Terror suspect Swedes freed from Pakistan

[The Local]– The Swedish foreign ministry has confirmed that four Swedish citizens, arrested in Pakistan in August as terrorist suspects, have been released and put on a flight to Stockholm.

The group include Mehdi Ghezali, who spent two years in Guantánamo Bay following his 2001 arrest in Afghanistan, as well as 28-year-old Munir Awad and 19-year-old Safia Benaouda, and their two and a half-year-old boy.

“I can confirm that they have been released,” Cecilia Julin, head of press at the Foreign Ministry told news agency TT.

Taliban hold hostages in Pakistan army headquarters

[The Times of India]– Taliban terrorists were on Saturday night holding 10-15 hostages, including security personnel, hours after launching an audacious attack on Pakistan Army’s headquarters in nearby Rawalpindi that sparked a fierce gun battle in which a Brigadier and five other armymen were killed.

While the casualties in the shootout following the assault by heavily-armed Taliban militants included a Lt Colonel, four terrorists were also killed.

The hostages include some civilian employees in the Army headquarters.

Deadliest Blast: Kills 53, Injures Over 125 in Peshawar Boulevard

[Pakistan Times]– A massive suicide car bomb ripped through Khyber market – leaving at least 53 people dead – in Peshawar on Friday, officials said.

The blast in a busy shopping area close to the main Khyber Bazaar of the NWFP metropolis also wounded more than 125 people, provincial health minister Zahir Ali Shah told reporters.

“At least 53 people were killed and more than 125 injured in the blast,” Shah told newsmen in the main Lady Reading Hospital.

Saeed should be interrogated for 26/11 attacks: PC

Home Minister P Chidambaram has demanded that Pakistan interrogate JuD chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed for the Mumbai terror attacks as all the evidence against him was on its soil.

Pakistani police have restricted the movement of Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks, and barred him from leading Eid prayers here citing “security concerns”.

Up to 100,000 have fled Khyber district, UN says

Between 56,000 and 100,000 people have fled their homes since Pakistani troops launched a new anti-Taliban offensive in the tribal Khyber district, UN and Pakistani officials estimated on Monday.

The military, backed by artillery and helicopter gunships, launched the offensive on Sept. 1 after a suicide bomber killed 22 policemen in Khyber, which lies on the main supply route for Western troops in Afghanistan.

“Over 100,000 people have arrived in Peshawar since the military mounted an offensive,” said Mian Iftikhar Hussain, information minister in North West Frontier Province. “We intend to set up a camp for them. We have asked the federal government to provide us assistance to cope with the situation.”

British bombers jailed for life

Three British Muslims were sentenced to life in prison in London on Monday after being found guilty last week of plotting to blow up transatlantic commercial aircraft with homemade liquid bombs.

Abdulla Ahmed Ali, the 28-year-old ringleader of the group, was given a minimum of 40 years before he would be eligible for parole. His accomplices, Assad Sawar, 29, and Tanvir Hussain, 28, received minimum sentences of 36 and 32 years, respectively.

Pakistan can gain from Chinese experiences; Zardari

Interpol issues Red Corner Notice against Hafiz Saeed

Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice (RCN) on Tuesday against Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed, who has been chargesheeted for masterminding the 26/11 Mumbai attack carnage.

The notice will make it difficult for Pakistan to let the dreaded chief of JuD roam freely.

Earlier, government sources said that the CBI, which acts as the nodal agency for all dealings with Interpol, has already written to the world police body, based on the 26/11 chargesheet, to get an RCN issued against Saeed who was let off by the Lahore High Court as Islamabad didn’t press charges against him.

Ottawa bolsters aid to Pakistan

Canada will expand aid to Pakistan, notably to bolster the weak public school system that has left a void to be filled by fundamentalist madrassas, as Ottawa increasingly views the country’s stability as key to success in Afghanistan.

In Pakistan Wednesday, International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda pledged $25-million for food, water and emergency shelter for refugees who fled a Pakistani military offensive against Taliban insurgents four months ago.
