Israelis refraining from spending tourist dollars in Turkey

Isreal News reports on an unofficial tourist boycott of Turkey.

“Turkey has been a favorite vacation spot for Israelis for many years but in recent years, Israeli tourists have taken to boycotting it after diplomatic spats between the country’s leaders. In the Passover season, Turkish resorts were reportedly hit hard by an unofficial Israeli tourist boycott after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s attack on Israel at the Davos conference.”

Military drill for Israel, US

[News24]– Israel and the United States will hold their biggest joint air-defence exercise next week, officials said, testing missile interceptors that would serve as a strategic bulwark in any future showdown with Iran.

The October 12-16 manoeuvres, dubbed Juniper Cobra, will be overseen by Admiral Mark Fitzgerald, chief of the US Navy’s Sixth Fleet and the most senior American officer to be involved in the biennial event, an Israeli official said on Thursday.

Israeli officials fear charges

[News24]– A senior Israeli cabinet minister on Tuesday blamed local human rights groups for hindering travel abroad by some leading officials who are concerned that they might faces war crimes charges.

Moshe Yaalon, one of four deputies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said he specifically would not travel to England for fear of prosecution over war crimes allegations made by human rights and pro-Palestinian groups.

TUC backs boycott of Israeli goods

The TUC today backed a targeted boycott of Israeli goods originating from illegal settlements and an end to arms sales to Israel to ramp up the pressure “for an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories”.

The decision to step up its position was triggered by widespread dismay by unions at the Israeli offensive in Gaza in January.

Reiterating the union’s condemnation of the offensive, Brendan Barber, the TUC general secretary, told union delegates that they “have a part to play” in seeing an end to the occupation, a dismantling of the separation wall and the removal of the illegal settlements.

Merkel presses Netanyahu on settlements

The construction of Jewish settlements on Palestinian lands must be stopped, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a meeting in Berlin.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on a four-day trip to Europe and has sought support for stronger sanctions against Iran, which Israel regards as a threat to its existence. But while German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed a willingness to consider new sanctions, she also reiterated calls from the Palestinians and US President Barack Obama to halt the construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
