There is a call for consistent guidelines for home care for HIV patients. In this report from thejakartapost.com, “Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that between 70 and 90 percent of people with HIV/AIDS receive treatment at home. Numerous studies have also shown that people with HIV/AIDS preferred to obtain treatment at home.”

Indonesian island and Australia caught in diplomatic standoff

Australia’s Herald Sun reports, “The governor of an Indonesian island told Australia yesterday that his country was “not a dumping ground” for asylum seekers – and refused permission for an Aussie ship to offload 78 Sri Lankan refugees.

The Oceanic Viking, a Customs vessel, last night remained anchored 10 nautical miles off Bintan Island as a bizarre diplomatic standoff continued.

Indonesian Navy eyes Russian, Chinese missiles

[RIA Novosti]– The Indonesian Navy is planning to arm its new patrol boats with Russian and Chinese missiles, the Antara national news agency reported on Tuesday.

“We will gradually increase the number of patrol boats and arm them with Russian and Chinese manufactured missiles,” the agency quoted Navy Commander Adm. Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno as saying.

Rescuers comb Padang rubble amid fears quake toll will top 1000

[The Australian]– Rescue teams are this morning combing desperately through rubble for survivors from yesterday’s earthquake in Indonesia amid fears that the death toll could top 1000.

The powerful earthquake, which struck near the city of Padang on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, has killed between 100 and 200 people, a disaster agency official said early on this morning.

Priyadi Kardono, spokesman for the national disaster agency, said about 500 houses had caved in and around 100 people were buried under the rubble, according to officials in the area.

Terror mastermind killed in Indonesia

Indonesian police stormed an Islamic militant hideout early yesterday in a raid that killed fugitive terror mastermind Noordin Mohammed Top and three other militants, police said.

Noordin’s body was among four recovered after the early morning raid on a village house in central Java, national police chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri told reporters, bringing to an end an exhaustive six-year manhunt.

“From national police doctors’ examinations, antemortem [investigations] and fingerprints sent by Malaysian police, thank God on this holy month of Ramadan … it’s Noordin M. Top,” Danuri said to applause.

Indonesia militants plotted Obama attack, says expert

A police investigation into last month’s Jakarta hotel bombings shows that militants also planned to use snipers to attack Barack Obama’s convoy when the United States president visits Indonesia, an intelligence expert told Reuters.

Authorities were also probing whether the suicide bombings at the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels on July 17 received overseas funding from a group linked to al-Qaeda, said Dynno Chressbon, an intelligence analyst at the Centre for Intelligence and National Security who is close to the police investigations.

The hunt goes on for terror mastermind

Many Indonesians breathed easier last week when local television networks announced the arrest of Noordin Mohammad Top, Indonesia’s most-wanted terrorist and suspected organizer of last month’s deadly JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton suicide bombings.

Reports breathlessly announced that Top had been killed during a televised 16-hour siege at his supposed hideout in central Java. Some reports carried the qualifier that the Indonesian police who conducted the investigation, pursuit and siege took the “official position” that the terrorist had in fact neither been arrested nor killed.
