India to purchase France Rafale fighter jet

[Washington Post]- The Rafale fighter jet finally has a new foreign owner after two decades of France trying to sell it. This 11 billion dollar settlement with India took place for 126 planes and a technology transfer. In France, 18 of these jets will be built and 108 will be constructed in India. Negotiations of the contract will soon begin.

India to pay for oil from Iran in yen?

[Bloomberg]- India has apparently been asked to pay for a portion of its oil imports from Iran in yen. This is due to concerns over the value of the rupee. The two Asian nations are attempting to continue their lucrative oil trade. The Indian rupee has been falling in value while the Japanese yen has been on the rise.

Ordeal of Indian duo in China ends

According to deccanherald.com, “The fortnight-long ordeal of two Indian business professionals in the Yiwu city of China ended on Wednesday after the communist country’s envoy in New Delhi was summoned twice during the day—first by officials of the Ministry of External Affairs to the South Block, and then again by External Affairs Minister S M Krishna himself to his residence.”

Deadly fire engulfs Indian hospital

Indian train accident toll – 22 dead

A train ran into the back of another in northern India, leaving 22 dead and 17 injured.

The Taipei Times reports, “The force of the impact was such that the engine of the Goa train ended lodged inside the last carriage of the other express. Bloodied bodies and people were pulled from the wreckage before being ferried to hospitals by ambulance.”

No question of signing NPT, CTBT : India

Sticking to its position, India ruled out signing the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) in its present forms but made it clear that it was committed to ridding the world of nuclear weapons.

The Indian stand was reaffirmed in the wake of the UN Security Council resolution, spearheaded by President Barack Obama, that asked all non-NPT signatories to join the treaty as non-nuclear weapon states.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Special Envoy on climate change Shyam Saran told reporters in Pittsburgh that India does not intend to be a party to the NPT as a non-nuclear weapon state.

“We are committed to nuclear disarmament and at the same time we are also committed to unilateral moratorium on nuclear tests,” he said on being asked whether India would sign the treaty in the wake of the UNSC asking non-NPT states to sign it.

Saeed should be interrogated for 26/11 attacks: PC

Home Minister P Chidambaram has demanded that Pakistan interrogate JuD chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed for the Mumbai terror attacks as all the evidence against him was on its soil.

Pakistani police have restricted the movement of Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks, and barred him from leading Eid prayers here citing “security concerns”.

India, Mongolia sign Civil Nuclear cooperation pact

India and Mongolia signed the Civil Nuclear Energy Cooperation pact on Monday, pledging to upgrade bilateral ties to a new level, thus taking their 2700 year-old relationship into the new millennium.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on ‘Development of Cooperation In the Field of Peaceful Use of Radioactive Minerals and Nuclear Energy’ was signed here after talks between Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and visiting Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj.

Interpol issues Red Corner Notice against Hafiz Saeed

Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice (RCN) on Tuesday against Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed, who has been chargesheeted for masterminding the 26/11 Mumbai attack carnage.

The notice will make it difficult for Pakistan to let the dreaded chief of JuD roam freely.

Earlier, government sources said that the CBI, which acts as the nodal agency for all dealings with Interpol, has already written to the world police body, based on the 26/11 chargesheet, to get an RCN issued against Saeed who was let off by the Lahore High Court as Islamabad didn’t press charges against him.
