Heavy rains in China have caused a dyke to be breached, reports CNTV. “The dyke at the Changkai section of the Fuhe River burst Monday evening, threatening the safety and property of people living in the area.”

China defends its military spending

From the Taipei Times, “In an obvious reference to Taiwan, General Xu Caihou (徐才厚), vice chairman of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Central Military Commission, told a Washington audience on Monday that China had to modernize and build its armed forces because the country ‘has yet to realize complete unification.’”

China contemplating military action against Somali pirates

From the Mail & Guardian, “China has not ruled out military action to rescue the crew of a coal ship hijacked by Somali pirates, although it is also pursuing negotiations, a Chinese military spokesperson said.”

China will based its decision on whether to use a military option on “will depend on developments.”

British-Chinese consortium to develop Iraqi oil field

The Iraqi government has awarded development rights to a large oil field to British and Chinese firms.

Xinhua reports, “Even more important is the Iraqi Cabinet’s approval of the bid by Britain’s BP Plc and its Chinese partner CNPC to develop the 17.8 billion barrel Rumaila field near the southern city of Basra. The deal was approved late on Friday, Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said, without providing further details.”

China sentences six to death over Xinjiang riots

[www.ddinews.com]– A Chinese court in the restive far western region of Xinjiang on Monday sentenced six people to death for murder and other crimes committed during ethnic rioting in July in which almost 200 people were killed.

It was not immediately clear from the brief report by the official Xinhua news agency if any of the death sentences would be commuted, as sometimes happens in China.

CISA calls China-specific iron ore price

[The Australian]– China Iron and Steel Association wants to set a China-specific price for iron ore that will not follow prices that other Asian steelmakers agree on with global mining giants, the association’s top negotiator for iron ore negotiations said Tuesday.

Iron ore contracts with overseas miners and the country’s steel producers should begin January 1, and CISA will lead the 2010 talks, CISA Chairman Deng Qilin said.

Deng said he expects iron ore to stay at a fair and reasonable price.

Russia, China sign deals worth $3.5 billion

[The Jakarta Post]– Russia and China signed agreements worth $3.5 billion Tuesday, but the former rivals-turned-strategic partners were still working on an energy deal, a top Russian official said.

The deals were signed during a visit by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to bolster energy, political and military ties.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov told reporters that Russian and Chinese businessmen and officials signed the agreements, including $500 million loans each from the China Development Bank to its Russian equivalent VEB, and from the Agricultural Bank of China to the state-controlled VTB bank.

Barack Obama cancels meeting with Dalai Lama ‘to keep China happy’

[Telegraph]– The decision came after China stepped up a campaign urging nations to shun the Tibetan spiritual leader.

It means Mr Obama will become the first president not to welcome the Nobel peace prize winner to the White House since the Dalai Lama began visiting Washington in 1991.

The Buddhist monk arrived in Washington on Monday for a week of meetings with Congressional leaders, celebrity supporters and interest groups, but the president will not see him until after he has made his first visit to China next month.

Al-Qaida threatens to attack China

[China Daily]– A prominent Al-Qaida militant on Wednesday threatened to attack Chinese targets in “reprisal” for the July 5 riots in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

He urged Uygurs in Xinjiang to “make serious preparations” for a “holy war” against the Chinese government and called on fellow Muslims for support.

Abu Yahya al-Libi, in a video posted on an Islamist website yesterday, called for “a true return to their (Uygurs) religion and … serious preparation for jihad in the path of God the Almighty and to carry weapons …”

Indonesian Navy eyes Russian, Chinese missiles

[RIA Novosti]– The Indonesian Navy is planning to arm its new patrol boats with Russian and Chinese missiles, the Antara national news agency reported on Tuesday.

“We will gradually increase the number of patrol boats and arm them with Russian and Chinese manufactured missiles,” the agency quoted Navy Commander Adm. Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno as saying.
