China: iPads pulled from shelves over trademark dispute

[Global Times]- Apple has pulled its iPads from shelves in China due to dispute over its trademark. Proview Technology (Shenzhen) had registered the trademark for mainland China in 2001. When Apple purchased the trademark from the Hong Kong branch of the company, Apple understood the purchase to include the mainland. Court cases in Shenzhen have ruled in favor of Proview, causing the need to remove the product from stores.

U.N. resolve on Syria brutality blocked by Russia and China

[LA Times]- Russia and China stopped the United Nations Security Council’s resolution for the violent attacks in Syria. The resolve was supporting an Arab League idea which might have quickened Syrian President Bashar Assad’s leave from office. Russia and China put a halt to the plans because they felt that the resolution by the U.N. was one sided and would only hold the government accountable, not the rebels wanting Assad to leave.

German Chancellor visits China

China takes issue with US trade probe

[China Daily]- The Chinese government has stated that the ongoing investigation of exported wind towers could hurt cooperation in energy and industry with the United States. The probe was announced Thursday over excessive dumping margin in wind tower prices from China and Vietnam.

Venezuela’s mystery credit from China

[El Universal]- President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela has faced questions over loans the government has received from China. The amount of oil used to repay the loans has a value far exceeding the original loans. Chávez had committed to providing answers to these questions back in November, but additional explanations have not been forthcoming. Russia has also provided significant loans to Venezuela.

Thousands of Vietnamese still forced into slavery

[Vietnam News]- Thousands of people in Vietnam have been forced into slavery during the past several years. Most are women who live in villages in the northern and central portions of the country. Many of these people were sold in China. Organizations are educating women on how to reduce the dangers of abduction and coercion.

China’s fourth quarter growth slows

[Wall Street Journal]- China posted a fourth quarter GDP improvement of 8.6%. While still a strong number, this represents a decrease from recent performance. Projections are for China’s economy to further slow.

GM Leads U.S. Carmaker Gains in China

In spite of a slowdown in the Chinese market, General Motors and Ford have reached new highs in automobile sales in the Asian country. “Deliveries to Chinese dealers climbed 8.3 percent from a year earlier to 2.55 million vehicles, Detroit-based GM said in a statement yesterday. Ford said its sales grew 7 percent to 519,390 units. Toyota Motor Corp. (7203), Japan’s biggest carmaker, said last week that China sales rose last year at the slowest pace since at least 2004 and Honda Motor Co. (7267) yesterday reported its first ever annual decline in deliveries in the country,” reports bloomberg.com.

China and South Korea hold first summit on North Korea after Kim Jong Il’s death

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Chinese President Hu Jintao met at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China to discuss what they will do to keep stability in North/South Korea. “The presidents of South Korea and China agreed Monday to work together to achieve peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, in their first summit since im Jong Il’s death opened the chance for major changes in North Korea,” washingtonpost.com.

Ordeal of Indian duo in China ends

According to deccanherald.com, “The fortnight-long ordeal of two Indian business professionals in the Yiwu city of China ended on Wednesday after the communist country’s envoy in New Delhi was summoned twice during the day—first by officials of the Ministry of External Affairs to the South Block, and then again by External Affairs Minister S M Krishna himself to his residence.”
