Kenya forces say they thwarted holiday terror plot

Sixty militants suspected of planning terror attacks were killed over the holidays in Kenya. Sacbee.com reports, “Kenyan authorities said Saturday that they had thwarted attempted attacks by an al-Qaida-linked Somali militant group over Christmas and the New Year, as Britain warned its citizens over looming terror threats in Kenya.

Col. Cyrus Oguna, a Kenyan military spokesman, said officials received intelligence from credible sources that the Somali militant group al-Shabab was planning an attack over Christmas and New Year.”

Endangered African elephants suffer worst year in decades

This year has been the worst year for elephants since ivory sales were outlawed in 1989. “A record number of large seizures of elephant tusks represents at least 2,500 dead animals and shows that organized crime — in particular Asian syndicates — is increasingly involved in the illegal ivory trade and the poaching that feeds it, the group said,” suntimes.com.

Kenyan policeman killed in Dadaab blast near Somalia

“An explosion near the world’s largest refugee camp in Kenya has killed at least one policeman, police say. A Kenyan official has told the BBC that he suspects Somali militants of carrying out the explosion,” as told in bbcnews.com. A couple other officers were also injured in the blast.

US threatens travel ban on Kenyan officials

The United States has threatened travel bans on top Kenyan officials if they fail to support reforms in the east African country, Washington’s ambassador to Kenya Michael Ranneberger said Thursday.

The measure was Washington’s most unequivocal expression of anger so far at its top regional partner’s failure to make good on the reform agenda agreed in the aftermath of last year’s deadly post-election violence.

“Letters signed by Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Johnnie Carson have been sent to 15 persons making clear that the future relationship of those persons with the United States is tied to their support for implementation of the reform agenda and opposition to the use of violence,” Ranneberger said.

Kenya ups Somali border troops

Kenya has stepped up surveillance of its border with Somalia after the killing of a top regional al-Qaeda leader during a lightning US military operation, military officials said on Sunday.

“We have taken measures. There is enough security at the border points, it has just been increased and this is a review we do from time to time,” Kenyan military spokesperson Bogita Ongeri said.
